Cleaner grain and healthier animals
Pig producers give positive feedback after implementing the SKIOLD Sigma Planet Drum Cleaner, citing cleaner raw materials, healthier animals and better welfare as the benefits.
Increased growth and stable production
On the Fævejle farm near Trustrup in Djursland, on the farm of pig producer Jens Hjort Jensen, the installation of a SKIOLD Sigma Planet Drum Cleaner has eliminated several problems of the nasty kind. After the installation before last year's harvest, the number of sudden deaths, protruding rectums and other forms of poor welfare has been drastically reduced.
- The problem is usually linked to toxins in the grain. We had problems with this for a while before we got the grain cleaner,’ explains Jens Hjort Jensen.
After getting the Sigma Planet Drum Cleaner, Jens can report increased growth and stable production all year round.
- ‘This is worth its weight in gold. Because in an increasingly high-performing production, we can't afford to have down periods several times during the year with poor-quality feed and production not running properly,’ Jens Hjort Jensen says.
The Planet Drum Cleaner cleans 80 tonnes of grain per hour, removing chaff, stones, gravel, dust and other impurities, as well as a special cleaning principle that enables it to also remove the toxins on the kernels themselves. A cleaning principle that differentiates it from the others on the Danish market.
- ‘Right after I got the grain cleaner, I was surprised at the large amount that was sorted out and previously ended up with the pigs,’ says Jens Hjort Jensen. The waste now ends up in a ‘waste house’, a container that Jens sometimes looks at through a hatch.
- It gives me a good feeling to look at the waste house, because what's in there is not the kind of feed I want to give the pigs.
The waste is sold to biogas plants, and now Jens Hjort Jensen is wondering why he didn't buy the Sigma sooner.

Cleaner grain and better well-being
Bjarne Feldthusen is also sharing in the benefits of optimisation with SKIOLD Sigma. Bjarne reports cleaner raw materials, healthier animals and better well-being among the farm's 575 sows and 14,000 slaughter pigs since the installation of a SKIOLD Sigma Planet Drum Cleaner in 2022.
- We had considered models with simpler screens, but ended up with the SKIOLD Planet Drum Cleaner. We haven't regretted it, even though it's one of the most expensive on the market, because it removes the waste in the grain efficiently - around 2 tonnes per 100 tonnes,’ explains Bjarne Feldthusen.
With cleaner raw materials, an effect can be seen on the health of the pigs.
- Many factors come into play in pig production, which makes it difficult to measure a direct effect of the Planet Drum Cleaner. But since we got the grain cleaner, we have had fewer dead sows, casts, gas puffers and balloon sows. We still use toxin binder, but we have halved the dose from two to one kg,’ explains Bjarne Feldthusen.
Bjarne Feldthusen also notes that the cleaned grain reduces wear on pumps, membranes and other parts in the transport equipment, disc mill and drying plant.
- For example, no dirt gets into the fan. Overall, the Planet Drum Cleaner increases reliability and at the same time we save money on service and maintenance,’ he says.
