Once pressed, it is important to cool down and harden the pellets as quickly as possible. The pellets should be cooled down to a temperature of maximum 4-6°C above the ambient temperature. It is important to cool the entire pellet, and not just the surface, over a lengthy period of time. This prevents the temperature of the pellet rises again during storage.

One way of cooling the pellets is by means of a counterflow cooler. A pellet spreader in the top of the cooler ensures a uniform distribution of pellets in the entire cooling area. The cooling is effectuated by aspiration of air from the entire bottom area and up through the layer of pellets. The pellets are discharged from the bottom where the temperature is lowest.

Discharge takes place at the same pace as the production of the pellets. This type of cooler requires complete emptying when changing a recipe.

After cooling, the pellets are sifted to ensure dust free pellets (usually 3-4%). Often, the sifter is a vibration type with 1-2 screen layers, a fine meshed for removal of dust, and a big-meshed screen net for removing larger particles such as lumps, foreign bodies, etc. The sifting capacity should match the pelleting capacity.

After sifting, the dust is redistributed to the pelletizer for reuse in the feed pelleting process.
