Customized calf feed improves growth, feed efficiency and profitability
At Toftegaard Farm in Denmark, producing feed on the farm is a key part of achieving efficient calf production. With a complete SKIOLD feed mill solution, the farm produces customized feed for approximately 2,500 animals, including around 2,000 Danish calves and 400–500 beef cattle.

A feed solution designed for modern calf production
Over the past few years, Toftegaard has continuously optimized its production facilities, investing in modern buildings, feeding systems and production equipment. A central part of this development has been the installation of a complete SKIOLD feed mill solution, enabling the farm to produce high-quality feed tailored to different groups of animals.
The feed mill provides full control of ingredients, nutritional value and feed consistency, allowing adjustments as production requirements change.
Customized feed for every growth stage
Calves have different nutritional requirements throughout their growth period. To meet these changing needs, Toftegaard currently produces four different feed formulations, each designed for a specific production stage.
The calves are divided into groups according to age and weight, making it possible to optimize feed composition throughout the production cycle. This ensures that every animal receives the right nutrients at the right time, supporting healthy growth and efficient feed utilization.
Full control of raw materials
The feed mill is equipped with nine raw material silos containing different feed ingredients, including cereals, soybean meal, rapeseed meal, beet pellets, vitamins and minerals.
Dedicated mineral hoppers ensure precise dosing of vitamins and minerals, while multiple grain silos make it possible to combine different grain varieties depending on the desired feed recipe.
Before storage, the grain is conditioned by adding water in a horizontal mixer to achieve the optimal moisture content. This process improves feed quality and creates ideal conditions for further processing.
Better growth and improved feed efficiency
Producing feed on the farm gives Toftegaard the flexibility to continuously improve feed formulations based on production results.
Today, the farm achieves an average daily weight gain of 1,250–1,300 grams and expects to increase this even further through ongoing feed optimization.
The possibility of adjusting feed recipes also improves feed palatability, encouraging higher feed intake and supporting better animal performance.
